Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody." - Jane Jacobs.

Forget the damned motor car and build the cities for lovers and friends.

Lewis Mumford

Growing up in Cleveland, I have spend many of my days  thinking about urban infrastructure, in all of its varieties of quality and decay. Ever since I was a child, I have been consumed with sonder as I gaze upon structures. What goes on in that house, or building? What have those walls seen? And if it was abandoned, what went on?

They say Cleveland is a gray city, but my eyes always saw a bouquet of vibrant colors and textures within the supposed gray tones.

I love the mix of architectural styles in Cleveland. The graffiti, decay, salt and rust all provide a comforting backdrop of visual noise, saying “life was lived here, life is being lived here, we are all struggling together, striving to keep warm in this cold city.” We are strangers, but share a backdrop. The scenery is a thread that ties people together in the city, however different their lives must be.

The original of this piece, which is not for sale, is a collage made of many materials, including acrylic paint, paper, cardstock, thread and aluminum foil. This was an exercise in which the mechanisms of color theory and visual design were consciously applied.

This may be one of my favorite pieces I have made and though the original is not for sale, I wanted to make the artwork available to anyone who would enjoy it, so I set up a print for you to purchase and have in your home, office, or to give as a gift.

Museum-quality print made on thick matte paper. Add a wonderful accent to your room and office with this print that is sure to brighten any environment.
